Florida Decks Need More Than Paint

Gulf Coast Outdoor Wood Needs the Right Products and Real Prep

A deck in Panama City Beach faces conditions that would challenge even well-maintained outdoor wood anywhere else: intense UV from both direct sun and Gulf sand reflection, salt air from the water, high humidity through the warm season, and repeated wet-dry cycles from afternoon thunderstorms.

Most deck staining failures happen for one of two reasons: wrong product for the environment, or insufficient prep. Sealing over mold, mildew, or dirty wood traps moisture and accelerates decay instead of preventing it. Power washing is the critical first step β€” and it needs to be followed by proper dry time before any stain goes down.

We select stain products based on the wood species, the deck's sun and water exposure, and the finish look you want β€” solid, semi-transparent, or clear. For dock boards and structures with direct salt water exposure, we recommend marine-grade products. For screened patios and covered structures, different formulations apply.

What We Stain & Seal

Every Outdoor Surface, Properly Protected

From wood decks to dock boards to patio furniture, Scorpion Paint applies the right product for each outdoor surface and its specific environment.

Covered & Screened Patios

Staining and sealing for covered patio floors and structural elements, including screened enclosure frames. Covered surfaces still need protection β€” UV penetrates screen mesh and moisture collects from humidity.

Wood Fences

Stain and seal wood fences for protection and curb appeal, with products rated for Florida's UV, moisture, and salt air. A properly maintained fence adds years of life to the structure.

Pergolas & Gazebos

Staining and sealing for pergolas, gazebos, and outdoor shade structures. These structures are often overlooked until wood begins to gray, crack, and splinter β€” maintenance staining extends their life significantly.

Dock Boards

Marine-grade products for dock boards and waterfront wood structures with direct salt water exposure. Standard deck stains are not rated for salt water splash and submersion β€” we use the right products for dock environments.

Pool Surrounds & Outdoor Furniture

Slip-resistant coatings for pool deck surfaces, and refinishing for outdoor furniture. Pool surrounds require products that handle UV, chlorine splash, and constant wet-dry cycling.

How It Works

Our Deck & Patio Staining Process

Five steps β€” every one of them contributing to a result that holds up in Florida's demanding outdoor environment.

Free Estimate & Wood Condition Assessment

We assess the current condition of the deck or surface, identify problem areas (rot, mold, failing stain, structural damage), and recommend the right product type and finish level for your specific situation.

Power Washing

Thorough pressure washing removes mold, mildew, salt residue, old failing stain, and surface contaminants. We allow adequate dry time β€” typically 24-48 hours depending on conditions β€” before applying any stain.

Sanding & Repairs

Sanding smooths the surface and raises the grain to improve stain penetration. Splinters are removed, loose boards addressed, and minor structural repairs made before staining begins.

Stain Application

Stain is applied by brush, roller, or sprayer depending on the surface type and access. We work in sections to maintain a wet edge and prevent lap marks. One or two coats per product specification.

Sealer Topcoat (Optional)

A UV-protective sealer is applied as the final coat when specified β€” recommended for high-exposure decks and dock boards. The sealer adds water repellency and extends the stain's life significantly in Gulf Coast conditions.
